Song About 92Y To Be Performed At The New York International Fringe Festival - 92Y Blog - 92nd Street Y - New York, NY

Song About 92Y To Be Performed At The New York International Fringe Festival
“Did you know,” Hilary Russo asked on our Facebook wall, “there is a song called ‘The 92 Street Y’ in the new musical The Seed of Abraham,” set to take the stage at the The New York International Fringe Festival this month? We did not, but we do now! Listen to the mp3.
Interested in hearing more about the song, we got in touch with Kenny Karen (seen in the photo at left), who not only is the composer/lyricist of “The 92nd Street Y,” but also the one singing. Turns out, he was a resident of 92Y Residence from September 1961 until March 1962, a time reflected in the song’s lyrics. Kenny recounted his time here at 92Y:
The Seed of Abraham, set in 1967, centers around three young people who fight for their dreams in the Bronx. “But when war breaks out in Israel, their loyalties are tested when they are forced to choose between themselves, their families or a higher power.” The musical has five showings at the Bleecker Street Theater in Manhattan, on August 14, 17, 19, 23 and 25.If memory serves me correctly I spent more time at the cafeteria than any other area of the building. My closest friend at the time was a Lower East Side resident, an old Camp Monroe buddy, Sheldon Silver, who for the past fifteen or sixteen years has served as Speaker of the New York State Assembly. We’re still in touch.

Saturday April 30 Improv Comedy Class for Teens
New York, NY Saturday, April 23, 2011. IMPROV 4 KIDS, the outreach and educational arm of Improv troupe EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH, is offering a Improv Class for Teens to NYC area students (ages 8-17), this Saturday (April 30, 2011) 12-2pm at the Times Square Comedy Club (669 8th Ave, NY Y 10036). Students and family will be invited to stay and see the professional Improv show at 3pm (complimentary with class participation, reg. $20-35). RSVP to register your family’s future stars via phone (212-568-6560) or email (info@fpny.org). Admission runs each student $30 (just $20 in advanced online at https://admin.ovationtix.com/trs/pe/8933085/prm/eight20).
Training in Improvisation teaches focus, self-confidence, communications skills (public speaking, one on one conversation skills, listening, eye contact), teamwork, leadership and creative writing. Major Corporations hire these teachers to remind their top execs and teams the importance of good communication and teamwork. IMPROV 4 KIDS hopes to impart this wisdom on youth before entering the work force. Plus, developing these skills at an early age helps students better learn in all disciplines.
Future stars all should be learning Improv as it is one of the most desired skills with today's casting directors for entry level jobs in TV and Commercials. These days, many casting directors will forego agents and managers these coveted jobs and contact the Improv companies directly for talent to audition. The Improv performer is able to create a character performance ready on the spot with out rehearsal time that is no longer available to directors. Current and former actors of EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH are showing up all over TV, Film, Web and Commercials.
This class will be taught by EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH co-founder and artistic director, Walt Frasier (http://www.waltfrasier.com/). As Improv performer, MC and/or pianist Mr. Fraiser has performed over 3000 shows with EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH, IMRPOV 4 KIDS, LMAO Off Broadway and other productions since 2002. Mr Frasier is currently serving as Director of Instruction for the Comedy Hall of Fame Foundation, offering accredited comedy classes in New York City high schools as well as training and managing future teachers for the program. Previous credits include appearance on Letterman, MTV, VH1, NICK, WE and dozens of theater productions off-Broadway, touring and regional theater.
